Brazilians are among the world’s biggest fans of Twitter.
Now the microblogging site has become the setting for a battle of wits between police and residents of Rio de Janeiro over a drink-driving campaign known as Operation Lei Seca, or “dry law”.
Anyone who has had too many beers but wants to drive home can turn to a page on Twitter, where those who have seen the distinctive branded police vans warn others which routes to avoid. In turn, the traffic police are logging on to foil the efforts of the techno-literate, often setting up in unexpected locations elsewhere. Penalties include having your licence suspended, being fined and having your car towed away. There has also been an advertising campaign to raise awareness.
Now, i’m not a fan of drinking and driving, and i’m not really a fan of Twitter either. I used Facebook for a bit but got bored, but I do find a sort of Unnecessary genius in their plan. Maybe Apple should get on the case. If your on your way home, your driving, your drunk and need to avoid the police. There’s an app. for that.
Nine Inch Nails mastermind Trent Reznor has won his first Academy Award. Reznor and his frequent collaborator Atticus Ross won the Oscar for Best Original Score forThe Social Network, a superb achievement considering the duo’s inaugural project as composers for film.
This is not the first major award Reznor and Ross have won for their work on The Social Network. They previously took home awards for Best Score from the Golden Globes, the Los Angeles Film Critics Society, Broadcast Film Critics Association and the Boston Society of Film Critics to name a few.
Activision as it confirms plans to release more download content for the series thanks to huge continued support from fans. With a bit of DJ Hero too it would seem.
After axing both the DJ Hero and Guitar Hero series in a shock announcement earlier this month, the publisher then confirmed that February’s planned Guitar Hero Downloadable Content releases would be the last, and that it “will not be able to release new DLC packs” in future. This month would official see the end of the GH and DJH series.
But it seems Activision has had a change of heart (sensed a money-making opportunity says I). A statement on the GH Facebook page reads: “Thank you for being a part of this community and all 3 MILLION of you rock! In thanks for your continued support, we’ve decided to celebrate by releasing some more downloadable content. Details coming soon…” As well as the DJ Hero fan-page on twitter states, ”Thanks for being a member of our community. In recognition of your continued support, we’ve decided to release more DLC! Details soon!” If it was a REAL gift and a GENUINE thank you, the content would be free wouldn’t it.
This is not how I want you to recruit law enforcement. There has to be better ways to recruit special agents!

This week, Bret Taylor, chief technology officer at Facebook and co-founder and former chief executive of FriendFeed, which was acquired by Facebook in August 2009, is providing his musing on when and were the next social revolution will spring from. After deducing a rough opinion from some articles he written and some interviews he’s given, a brief overview of Facebook as of the start of 2011 looks like this:
Founded in February 2004, Facebook is a social network utility and website, with over 600 million active users. The company is privately held, so does not publish official results, but says it is cash positive as of 2009. Facebook employs over 2,000 people and has offices in 12 countries.
Probably the biggest technology problem that Facebook tells us they have is delivering Facebook to all the people who use it, in the places they want to use it. The past couple of years has seen a rise in really advanced mobile devices. The most symbolic of this is the iPhone, but now with the Android operating system we’re seeing a huge amount of innovation in the mobile space, and more and more people are interacting with Facebook as much on their mobile devices as on their PCs and laptops.
The Facebook platform really took off in the gaming industry. Zynga for example is a company based in San Francisco. It currently has a market cap that exceeds that of Electronic Arts, which was the incumbent game company before Zynga. The company is completely defined by social gaming though – games that you play with your friends. All of their games are Facebook-enabled. They dont seem to really be anywhere else though, Surely relying on Facebook as a platform is just bad planning by Zynga. But that’s a blog for another day.
In what I think is the most intelligent use of the biggest social networking site for age if not so far, Blizzard have pledged to reveal a new and exclusive Diablo 3 screenshot for every 25,000 Likes they receive on their Facebook page. They will keep offering new screens until the page exceeds the one million mark.
This quote recently appeared on the Diablo Facebook page: “The Warcraft Facebook page recently hit 1 million who Like it and rubbed it in our faces. We know there are millions of Diablo players out there, and to take the fight back we have some incentives all lined up.”
We’ve heard hardly anything about Blizzard’s highly anticipated action RPG since the reveal of the Demon Hunter class at Blizzcon last year. That could be about to change, providing enough people show some love for the Diablo Facebook page. Right now 552,531 people like it, but that’s not enough. For every 25,000 extra likes it receives a new screenshot will be revealed.
If you like Diablo, swing by Facebook and declare your love officially. While you’re waiting for the 25,000 likes to roll in, have a read of our Diablo 3 preview, or check out the Diablo 3 site for more information.
Sony’s Playstation Phone aka: The Xperia Play, will be officially unveiled next week on Facebook.
Sony Ericcson’s Facebook even has a count down timer and a very familiar, very disturbing video.
Announce is dated for Feb. 13, 18:00 GMT. What do you think? Too little, too late, or exactly what you’ve been waiting for?
Discuss.
I wasnt really sure that all these girls were from Ex Yugoslavia, but I have been assured by Burek.

Kalgoorlie model Amanda Hinchcliffe has been doing quite well in the modeling industry. Amanda has been featured in Ralph, Miss Indy and several other modeling competitions and magazines. Im very impressed that coming from Kalgoorlie she has also made it in the modeling industry while also working her day job. Its great to see a fellow Aussie doing well.
p.s. A few reports are saying Amanda is from the Gold Coast and not Kalgoorlie. Amanda write in and let us know either way or via Twitter.
